Auction Websites are Great to Experiment With Your eCommerce Idea

Learn About Using eBay as an Online Business Model

Auction websites are a great option if you have a product you want to experiment with to determine the market demand and how much people are willing to pay for it. There are many auction websites out there but the biggest and most popular one is none other than the household name eBay.

Thousands are making money on eBay online. I am still very much amazed by how eBay has transformed online retail and cannot get over how much of a difference the creation and ongoing success of eBay has made for many individuals. It is simply superb and commendable.

eBay-preneurship, as I call it, allows you to have very low initial costs of doing business with no barriers of entry. No one can stop you from putting up a product for sale on eBay at whatever price you want to. There is simply no risk or restriction. Think about it as having your own website, except without the time, effort and expense it takes to create and market your own website.

Auction Websites - eBay What I like best about auction websites like eBay is that it already has a very large global community of buyers and sellers that you can instantly tap into.

There are some people that will only buy and sell on eBay, no matter what the prices of the items are. eBay has a plethora of extremely useful resources and tools to help sellers succeed in their business.

eBay also has a built in payment system called PayPal, through which you can remit and accept payments. PayPal is a free service that works on a commission basis. In addition to PayPal, eBay offers several market research tools for you to study your market trends and take the steps necessary to succeed in your business.

Like any business model, using eBay as a business has some challenges of its own. You are still a retailer at the end of the day (just your avenue of selling has changed as you now sell online).

You may face challenges with inventory management and warehousing, cash flow management, shipping and handling and customer returns and exchanges. However, with a Drop Shipment Model, which is also conducive to eBay as a business model, many of the aforementioned challenges can be avoided.

Another thing to keep in mind is that despite eBay’s large community, there will be close competition for your product (unless you are offering something unique) from existing sellers who have been selling on eBay for a long time and have built the reputation that shows in their customer feedback (the “Power Sellers”).

Often times, customers go back to the same seller if their last experience was a positive one. Overall, there are clearly more advantages to disadvantages in using auction websites such as eBay. It is probably my favorite online retail model.

I have been a member of eBay since 2002 and since then have sold thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. I have also been through the extensive eBay Power Seller course that teaches you how to make money on eBay online by getting on top of the Power Seller ranks quickly and running a successful business online.
